SAMPLE OF LEADING SOUTH AFRICA GOLF COURSES :
Gary Player Country Club
Arguably South Africa's most famous course courtesy of its position as the top ranked course for 5 years. Situated in the crater of an extinct Volcano, the course cuts through the African bush and flanks a nature reserve, for 16 holes. Thick kikuyu rough and impenetrable bush punishes the wayward shot, so come armed with a good swing and a better brain.
This extremely well designed course, which opened in 1937, is situated against a tree-covered slope. The superb kikuyu-covered fairways feature numerous hazards and lead to excellent greens. There are 85 bunkers and water comes into play on 11 of the holes. A beautiful course to look at, but very challenging to play.
The Lost City
This course provides spectacular views of the Palace Hotel and the neighboring game reserve. The most hazardous area of the Lost City Golf Course is the 13th hole. Inhabiting the water hazard are 38 Nile crocodiles, some of them nearly 14 ft long. In addition to the 13th, holes eleven, fourteen, fifteen and sixteen are all played from elevated tees offering thrill, excitement and challenge to the golfer.
Ranked #1 in South Africa in 2005 and situated on the southern border of the Kruger National Park, Leopard Creek presents a rare opportunity to play an outstanding bushveld golf course. The 360 hectare development is bordered to the north and the west by the picturesque Crocodile River and the Kruger National Park.
Durban Country Club rates as one of the finest courses in the world, let alone Africa, or even South Africa. It has a merry mix of tall trees, thick bush, severe slopes, undulating fairways that sometimes resemble rolling waves, and some very clever tee positions, with the ever penalizing bunkers lying in wait.
A rugged beauty of a course. Golf course architect, Robert Trent Jones, Jr. has created a dramatic golfing experience overlooking the Indian Ocean and some of South Africa's finest and certainly most dramatic golf holes can be found here. The thirteenth, a par 3 played across a waterfall is generally regarded the best short hole in the country.
Ranked #5 in South Africa in 2005, Arabella is perfectly designed to exploit is unique position alongside the largest natural lagoon in Southern Africa. The 8th, 9th, 17th and 18th holes run parallel to the lagoon, proving a truly memorable experience.
Situated on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains, few courses can compete with the views offered by Erinvale. A tough, yet flat front nine prepares golfers for the hilly back nine where the course really livens up. Huge bent grass greens and bunkers are hallmarks of this course.
Set in the famous Franschhoek Wine region, this new Jack Nicklaus Signature Course is a treat to play. Pearl Valley is probably the top conditioned course in South Africa. As with many Nicklaus courses, water on the right with plenty of sand, will keep the golfers mind off the wide landing areas provided.
An 18 hole championship course designed by Peter Matkovich with a backdrop of vineyards, gardens, forests and mountains provides the setting for this beautiful exclusive course. The course is always in excellent condition with bent grass greens and lush fairways.
Fancourt - The Links
The course presents undulating windswept terrain and dune-style landscape. Every hole has received detailed attention to ensure that the overall balance in terms of length, position of hazards and shot values are in harmony. As a result, The Links presents a stern test in all weather conditions.
Fancourt - The Montagu
Designed by Gary Player, the Montagu is South Africa's best parkland golf course. With the highest levels of conditioning and true championship layout, The Montagu at Fancourt sets the standards by which all other courses in South Africa are measured.
The Pezula Championship Golf Course is a sweeping spectacle of fairways and greens rolling through the pristine southern cape landscape. Flanked by indigenous forest, flora and unforgettable vistas, the course offers players both a challenging and rewarding golf experience.
